A museum within a book

A museum within a book

“Encompassing the beauty of the Museo del Prado in one single volume is an extraordinary challenge and, at the same time, a true gift for those fortunate enough to own one.” The result of the challenge and the gift of which Miguel Zugaza, the director of our gallery, speaks is The Prado Masterpieces, a large-format volume which few art lovers will be able to resist.

The Prado Masterpieces

Measuring 27.9 x 32.2 cm and running to 494 pages, what could be more enticing than whiling away the hours lost in contemplation of the fantastic beings hidden in any corner of Bosch's paintings, the beauty of a fold in a Flemish painting, the reflection of light captured so beautifully by Sorolla, or the gaze from one of Goya's portraits. The Prado Masterpieces, however, is not a book conceived to be enjoyed just once and discarded; nor is it intended as a coffee table book, one of those exquisite objects designed to adorn living rooms but rarely read: organised into 14 chapters which review the gallery's permanent collection in chronological order, this volume is a spectacular reference book which both introduces us to the knowledge on the painting through its texts, and delights us with the simple and glorious pleasure of thumbing through it and beholding the masterpieces.

El Libro del Prado
