Exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of the "The Renaissance Portrait" exhibition which ran from 3 June to 7 September 2008 at the Museo Nacional del Prado. It is the first time an exhibition proposes a global approximation to the Renaissance portraits and to portrait painting as a autonomous gender. A part from the paintings, the exhibition also includes medals, sculptures, drawings and engravings, which offers a more complete vision of the gender evolution. Through numerous works from both national and international institutions, the exhibition, and this catalogue, offers a survey of the two first two centuries of portrait painting, and reflects the extraordinary typological variety and the conceptual complexity of a gender which grew exponentially all over Europe during the 15th and 16t century. The publication of the catalogue shall be entrusted to the curator, Miguel Falomir, and includes contributions from a number of renowned experts: Miguel Falomir, Michael Bury, Lorne Campbell, Joanna Woods-Marsden, Alexander Nagel, Juan Luis González, Jennifer Fletcher and Luke Syson.
