The collection of the Museum of the Trinity was composed of alienated work from the Spanish Church after the Confiscation Mendizabal decreed between 1835 and 1836. At the considerable number of paintings were added some new acquisitions and works of contemporary artists who were awarded during the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. All were assigned to the Prado Museum after the abolition of the Trinity Museum in 1872.
José Álvarez Lopera reconstructs in detail the history of this institution, until now very little known, based on over sixty mostly unpublished documents. On the other hand, the study of thirteen known inventories has allowed providing new data on more than two hundred paintings of important artists such as Alonso Cano, Vicente Carducci, Claudio Coello, Luca Giordano, El Greco, Juan Bautista Maíno, and Francisco Antonio de Pereda o Francisco Rivalta, among others. With the publication of test and the new documentation, this book becomes an indispensable reference for readers who wish to deepen their knowledge of the funds and the history of one of Spanish museums more relevant and therefore of history art our country.
