Revise edition od the exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of the "The 19th century in the Prado" exhibition which ran from 31 October 2007 to 20 April 2008 at the Museo Nacional del Prado. This exhibition meant the rediscovery of an important part of the Museum's holdings which remained hidden since the restoration works in the Casón del Buen Retiro began in 2001. The exhibition curators were José Luis Díez and Javier Barón, who selected the most important Spanish paintings from the 19th century, including masterpieces by Francisco Pradilla, Eduardo Rosales, Mariano Fortuny or Joaquín Sorolla. During the storage time, the canvases were restored and an exhaustive study was undertaken by the Museum. This study is condensed in this revise edition of the catalogue that offers a survey of the evolution of Spanish 19th century painting, from the neoclassical portraits, through historical painting and naturalism until the appearance of new aesthetic suppositions late 19th century. Includes 12 essays by the curators, Leticia Azcue Brea and Ana Gutierrez Márquez, 107 profusely illustrated catalogue entries and artists biographies.
