Exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of the "Velázquez's Fables. Mythology and Sacred History in the Golden Age" exhibition which ran from 2 November 27 to 24 February 28 at the Museo Nacional del Prado. The exhibition catalogue is the first monograph that profoundly studies Velázquez as a history painter, something which has not been done in this way before, despite that a numerous part of his works belong to the genre of history painting. In this catalogue leading experts on Velázquez and specialists on 17th century culture examine Velázquez´ religious and mythological production from the standpoint of the painter s aesthetic interests, the key events in his life, the artistic, intellectual and social context in which he moved and the expectations of his public. The publication of the catalogue shall be entrusted to Javier Portús, curator of the exhibition and Head of the Department of Spanish Painting at the Museo del Prado.
