Among the many objects of analysis that caught the attention of ARISTOTLE (384-322 BC), the literary phenomenon was also counted and, within it, its most notable manifestation of its time: the theater. In the succinct treatise that receives the name of POÉTICA -translated, presented and annotated in this edition by Alicia Vil lar Lecumberri- masterfully exposes the formal structure of the tragedy and comedy of ancient Greece. It is here that we find for the first time defined some literary concepts -the plot or plot of a play, the different parts of a dramatic piece, the effects that the theater produces on the viewer or reader-, as well as terms such as catharsis or purification , the vicissitudes or change of fortune, or the concept of anagnorisis, "recognition", which since then became common currency in all subsequent development of Western literature.
