Gayo Plinio Secundo was born in Como in 23 AD. The busy biography of him prevents us from remaining solely with the image of a scholar locked up in his library. Plinio had an active life, traveled to distant places, met people and had experiences that provided the bulk of the information for his encyclopedia and that at the same time helped to awaken his interest in certain subjects. To this must be added his passion for reading and his obsession with studying, which also indirectly provided him with knowledge of nature. Natural History in 37 books is the first encyclopedia of nature conceived as such, which includes the description of the universe and the world, man, the animal and plant kingdoms, with the pharmacopoeia derived from them, and the mineral kingdom, with long excursus also on aspects of social organization or human activity.
